The Torq Tamer torsional shock mitigation system was developed to reduce severe axial and torsional vibrations caused by drilling in hard formations. By mitigating drilling deficiencies such as reactive torque and stick slip, the Torq Tamer system helps maintain stable torque on the bit surface contact, equalizing these forces and providing a more consistent WOB. The Torq Tamer system is fully hydraulic, with no metal springs, and features hydraulic fluid chambers that decouple torque transmission through the tools.
This hydrodynamic coupling acts as a shock absorber, absorbing torsional and axial shock and vibration while slowly allowing optimal torque and WOB state to return without any hard metal-to-metal contact.
The faster response rate of the hydraulic system works to dampen damaging torsional and axial reactive vibrations, resulting in more effective drilling and less damage. Consistent load/deflection characteristics are maintained during drilling operations. Torq Tamer AXIAL GUARD The Axial Guard uses multiple non-linear fluidic “springs” that allow tools to be configured for specific drilling environments. The Axial Guard is bi-directional, so forces are dampened during drilling and subsequent reaming operations. Torq Tamer TORSIONAL GUARD The Torsional Guard reacts to torsional impact by contracting axially, slightly reducing WOB, and allows the bit to unload and match the available energy to the bit face. This instant reaction helps mitigate both staff slippage and the torsional oscillation impact of the bit-rock interface.
